Top 10 New Mexico Histories

Topics represented are important in the development of the State of New Mexico, its people and its culture.  As with any “Top” list, these are the reviewer’s personal choices, but all the selections have been recognized elsewhere for their merits. Selections are arranged alphabetically.

In the Days of Victorio; Recollections of a Warm Springs Apache - Eve Ball
A sad tale of one man’s struggle with the US Government, gold seekers, and the like to keep his people in their homeland in Southwestern New Mexico.

Coronado on the Turquoise Trail : Knight of Pueblos and Plains - Herbert E. Bolton
An in-depth study on the planning, route, and the eventual entrada of the Spanish into what is now New Mexico. All studies of Coronado and New Mexico begin with Bolton’s classic work.

Origins of New Mexico Families : a Genealogy of the Spanish Colonial Period - Fray Angelico Chavez
The seminal work on Hispanic Genealogy in New Mexico, it is also a good source for biographical and historical information.

El Gringo; or, New Mexico & Her People - W. W. H. Davis
Davis was appointed as what would now be called attorney general of New Mexico in the 1850’s. His recollections detail what the customs, people, and conditions were like all over New Mexico shortly after the American occupation.

Revolt of the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico and Otermin’s Attempted Reconquest 1680-1682 - Charles W. Hackett
Hackett's in-depth, excellently researched description of New Mexico’s arguably most historic event. Although new research has occurred, Hackett's remains the benchmark.

Great River – the Rio Grande in North American History - Paul Horgan
This Pulitzer Prize winner is so much more than a history book as it describes the customs, culture, and mannerisms of those who founded and settled in New Mexico from the 16th to the 20th Century. Written much like a novel, it is hard to put down. A must-read if one wants to really know New Mexico.

Kiva, Cross, & Crown – the Pecos Indians and New Mexico, 1540-1840. - John L. Kessell
The Pecos was the easternmost Pueblo and a center for trade/war with the plains Indians. Kessell covers the initial contacts with the Spanish, depopulation, migration, and finally the demise of the Pueblo. It is an excellently researched history covering not only the Pecos peoples but the entire region as well.

The Lincoln County War – a Documentary History - Frederick Nolan
Although he resides in the UK, Nolan has set the standard for all future research on the war, Pat Garrett, and Billy the Kid . A well-documented and objective narrative that eliminates the myths with good, solid facts.

Albuquerque – a Narrative History - Marc Simmons
New Mexico’s biggest metro area deserves a book all its own. And what a book it is! Simmons gives a rich, detailed, and colorful history of the area from its beginnings in Old Town, the emergence of New Town, to the rise of the military bases.

Brothers of Light, Brothers of Blood : the Penitentes of the Southwest - Marta Weigle
There have been many books and articles on the penitentes but most are full of myth and sensationalism. According to the late Fr. Tom Steele (himself a penitente), this is the most accurate, authoritative, and best written of them all.
